New: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser in a compact

Laura _Mercier_Tinted_Moisturiser_Compact

I’m excited to confirm that the rumours are true… a compact version of Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturiser will be available in the UK in September 2012.  The best selling tinted moisturiser - renowned as one of the most popular formulas ever - will come in a lightweight crème formula compact with SPF 20.

Like the original, the compact promises sheer to moderate, buildable coverage with a natural, dewy finish, suitable for all skin types.  I normally steer away from compacts as I find they don’t work well with dry skins, but have hope that this one might be a winner.  And while there’s no point in opting for tinted moisturiser if you’re after a foundation finish, I expect that the buildable element will be greater with a compact.

Available in an impressive 12 shades (Porcelain, Blush, Nude, Bisque, Sand, Fawn, Almond, Tawny, Caramel, Tan, Walnut, Mocha), it comes with a custom designed sponge applicator.  It’s available in the US now at LauraMercier.com if you’d like a look at the shades.

The compact contains 7.50 g/0.26 oz as opposed to 50ml/1.7 fl oz in the original tube.  The price will be the same, £33.

The new Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Crème Compact will be available at Laura Mercier UK retailers nationwide beginning September 2012, priced £33.

Are you a fan of Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser?  Do you like the idea of a compact version?

Laura Mercier Crème Smooth foundation review ~ warm ivory

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth

I rave about Laura Mercier everywhere I go, have converted many friends pre blogging days and probably recommend one of her products most days on twitter. People probably think I work for them… sadly I have no association whatsoever, but I do think it’s one of the most under appreciated beauty brands out there. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it…. people either haven’t tried it, or they love it!

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth (2)

Crème Smooth is the second Laura Mercier foundation I’ve fallen for.  The moisturising foundation was my absolute holy grail and I used it for a long time ( sadly heard it may be discontinued), but I couldn’t resist giving Crème Smooth a go as soon as it launched. It comes in a heavy, opaque glass jar with an airtight plastic shield on top and a little plastic scoop to lift out product with.

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth (3)

It couldn’t be more different from the moisturising foundation I used previously… it was fluid which blended quickly and easily leaving a perfect-but-real finish.  Crème Smooth requires some getting to know you time… you’ve got to learn to work with it, but boy is it worth it!  The shade I use is Warm Ivory, which is in fact slightly darker than Warm Ivory in the Moisturising Foundation, and my skin type is dry.

As you can see it’s quite thick, creamy and almost solid looking in the jar.  You could probably turn it upside down without spilling (I’m not prepared to check!).  This scared me… it reminded me of that Leichner stage makeup I used to see in the chemist years ago (it’s not like that!).

“Laura created this modern, lightweight foundation that floats over skin without visibly settling into fine lines. The hydrating formula includes a multipeptide complex infused with Dermaxyl and advanced optical diffusers that help to visibly smooth out lines and wrinkles.”

It sounds almost contradictory that this should be described as lightweight - and yet that’s exactly what the finish is: excellent coverage yet lightweight.

Crème Smooth can be applied using fingers, a sponge (which the girl on the counter recommended) or a foundation brush. For a long time I applied it with fingers or the ELF flat ended powder brush.  I since discovered Real Techniques Stippling brush and that’s what I normally use now (though the ELF worked well too).

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth (4)

This little blob is almost twice what I’d use for one application… a little goes along way with this foundation (which is just as well, as it ‘aint cheap!).  I warm the product on my palm (the padded bit below the base of my thumb to be precise), dot it onto cheeks with the stippling brush and blend in small circular movements all over my face in a really fine layer.  It has medium to full coverage, the most coverage I’ve ever had in a foundation, probably on a par with Estee Lauder Double Wear but with a very different finish.

The key to this foundation is to use very little. I might add more on a night out, but for a daytime look, the smallest amount is enough to give brilliant coverage - and yet (this is the exciting bit…) it looks very natural! I can not abide foundation that looks or feels heavy. I don’t want to see it on my face, nor for anyone else to see it - I just want it to cover imperfections and make my skin look good - and this does! It can of course be built up for complete coverage if preferred for evening and is 100% buildable.

Looking at the first blob and slightly smoothed out swatch above, you’d think this would look thick and heavy on your face, yet it doesn’t.  It blends out beautifully and seems to soften into your skin as it warms, looking even better as the day goes on. It leaves a subtle radiance on the skin and feels soft, fine and comfortable, plus it lasts really well, especially if a primer is worn underneath. I have Laura Mercier foundation primer (funnily enough) though it’s almost run out. You can see how it’s covered most of the light freckles on my arm (click to enlarge for greater detail).

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth in Warm Ivory

I wasn’t actually taking this pic to show the foundation or I might have paid more attention to the application - it was for a (yet unpublished) post on Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Epetant eyeshadow, but hopefully this will give you an idea of how it looks on the skin.  To me, it gives a soft focus effect, one for which I am extremely grateful!  My blusher in this pic is Rose from my Laura Mercier Colour Wardrobe, which looks very similar to the Second Skin Rose Petal shade.

I don’t normally use this much eye makeup or curl my hair, so I do look more ‘made up’ than normal here… you’ll have to try and imagine this foundation with just mascara, a touch of eyeliner and glossy lips - ie even more natural looking!

Laura Mercier Crème Smooth costs £40.85 Urban Retreat’s Beautique.com ouchy… I know, but I’ve been using mine for several months and it’s not even half gone, which makes it a touch more palatable!  Recommended for normal to dry skins and mine is in the shade Warm Ivory.

What do you think of this product? Any other Laura Mercier fans out there?  Please do let me know your thoughts - thanks for reading! Nic x

My first ever monthly favourites post… I always love reading these on other blogs and have been asked to do them on here, so despite being halfway through January, I thought I’d share my December favourites!  I’ve included makeup, skincare and hair products. (I used a separate set of suncare products while on holiday but I’ll do a separate post on those).
First up, makeup…

Nip + Fab Sheer Make-Up Fix  Described as a BB (Blemish Balm) I view this more as a primer product. It evens out skintone, refines pores and provides a great base for foundation. If you have fabulous skin it may well give you the confidence to go au naturel… sadly that won’t be me! It does help my foundation apply, look and last better though and is great value for money. NB it’s a completely clear gel.
Vichy Liftactiv Retinol HA Night  This was a 2011 hero product for me.  I hadn’t used Vichy products for years and this totally blew me away. First of all I adore the presentation of the product. The conical lid comes off to reveal a slimmer version underneath, which you press to ‘foam’ the product onto your hand. It feels and sounds like mousse when it’s dispensed, but applies like cream. This feels divine on the skin and really does make my face look refreshed and ‘plumped up’ in the mornings. The Liftactiv range contains hyaluronic acid and retinol (meaning spf must be used by daytime) the products feel really gentle on my skin and didn’t cause any irritation at all.
Vichy Liftactiv Retinol HA Eyes  The accompanying eye product is equally lush.  Like the face cream, I love how this product applies, by pressing the long skinny nozzle to release the perfect amount.  It feels ever so slightly waxy and really moisturising around my eyes.
La Roche Posay Redermic+ (sensitive skin) This anti wrinkle firming moisturiser contains complex anti ageing ingredients including 5% pure Vitamin C. It temporarily plumps up the skin and fills in fine lines making it look temporarily firmer and smoother - I do tend to top it up and reapply makeup if I’m going out for the evening. This product also has long term anti ageing benefits, and feels rich but not too heavy on the skin. I have big respect for the science behind the La Roche Posay brand and have liked all of their products I’ve tried.

Label M Organic Moisturising Lemongrass Shampoo and Conditioner smell beyond gorgeous and for some reason seem to keep it clean twice as long as normal. They are paraben free and contain an organic blend of Lemongrass (obvs!), Echinacea and Jojoba oil; the packaging is sleek and I love the user friendly pump bottles. More than anything I love the smell, but in all honesty these products didn’t make my hair feel as moisturised and nourished as expected considering the price point. They seemed to make my hair quite big & puffy, so may be better suited to someone looking for volume. (Also available in Orange Blossom which I think sounds gorgeous!)
Label M Organic Lemongrass Shampoo is £12.45 and Conditioner is £15.95 for 200ml at Beauty Booth
Sleek Blow Out Cream is one of the best styling products I’ve tried in a looong time. I really struggle to find a styling product that works well with my hair. It smells beautiful, quite sweet like vanilla. It fights frizz and coats my hair in nourishing cream which seems to hold the style well without weighing it down at all.  I’ve used it with my Babyliss Big Hair and when blowdrying my hair straight and it worked great both ways - it even seemed to cut down on drying time (always a bonus!).
Label M Sleek Blow Out Cream costs £13 for 150ml at Beauty Booth and I’ll definitely replace this when it runs out!

Something Old, Something New...

I'd like to share something old and something new - two of my current favourite products. First up was a present from a very dear friend and the make up item I've loved and used the most - ever!

Something Old...

This Limited Edition Laura Mercier Colour Wardrobe has been around for quite a while, so you may be familiar with it already -

The double palette contains eyeshadows, blushers and lipcolours in incredibly usable shades. I've probably used this almost every day over the past year and have only just 'hit pan' this week with my favourite blush shade.

This is how it looked when I first got it - all perfect and pristine! Sorry it's such a small pic but you can see the row of eyeshadows along the top, with 3 blushers below and a double ended eyeshadow brush. In the lower palette there are 6 lipcolours and 2 glosses, with a double ended lipbrush. Both layers have a mirror.
No doubt it's terribly poor blogger etiquette to show you pics of my much loved and used palette, but hey...

The outside looks quite glamorous, like patent mock croc

Top layer - 6 eyeshadows: Chocolate, Sable, Twinkling Star, Stellar, Tiger's Eye and Baroque
& 3 blush: Spice, Apricot Blossom and Lotus

Lower layer - 6 lip stains: Mulberry, Hibiscus, Shy Pink, English Rose, Brick Red and Mocha
& 2 lip glazes: Plum and Naked
Lip swatches (in same order they appear)

Eyeshadow swatches (in order)

Blush swatches

I hope you like this as much as I do - it's amazing for both everyday and evening looks and is available at House of Fraser for £50, which is pretty good value considering most of these items would start from at least £16 individually.

Something New

My latest beauty purchase is the new Clarins Skin Illusion foundation, as recommended by the lovely Stine at Chic Beauty Blog

I'm a big fan of Laura Mercier foundations and had been using Creme Smooth all winter, but fancied something lighter for Spring/Summer. I haven't used Clarins foundations for years, but was really drawn to this one for its ease of application, pump bottle and natural coverage. It's also spf 10.

It has a very fine, light consistency which spreads really quickly and easily. At first it looks super light but seems to set to a lovely level of light to medium coverage, without looking at all heavy. It has a gorgeous light fragrance, which reminds me of a cross between roses and parma violets!

The coverage is also extremely buildable and lasts all day even without powder - something of a miracle in my experience!

I lovely the heavy weight glass bottle and how the product
appears suspended in the glass at a slightly wonky angle!

I'm a huge fan of pump bottles - so much more hygienic and best of all - quick!
One pump delivers the perfect amount for my whole face.

This is the product on my hand (not a full pump) - I have the shade Honey

Rubbed in a little

Fully blended - you can see how it covers some of the freckles on my hand
(which I wasn't really aware of til I started photographing swatches!)

Skin Illusion is now available at Escentual for the reduced price of £19! Have you tried either of these products?  Which foundation (if any) will you be wearing this Summer?

Please leave me a comment - and if you would be so kind as to follow me it would totally make my day! Thanks for reading. x
