Barry M Gelly Nails: Papaya Review & Swatches

I do love a glossy nail and normally achieve this with Seche Vite top coat or my SensatioNail home gel kit, so was intrigued to try Barry M’s new Gelly Hi Shine polishes.  The rich Winter shades looked good, but the Spring Summer ones are much more irresistible.  Always a sucker for a dusty orange, I couldn’t resist Papaya and today’s sunshine was just the boost I needed to use it.

It’s a touch gloopy to apply and I would have been happier with the finish from a 3rd coat; the brushstrokes are quite evident during application but do settle and smooth out (mostly) when dry. I think this is a gorgeous colour and am happy with the finish, but does it achieve what other polishes can’t?

In all honesty, no… it does leave a glossy thick coat, which could certainly pass for a gel mani, but in my experience, any polish will look like this with a top coat of Seche Vite. The beauty of Seche is that it smooths out the surface of polish for a perfect finish - and of course is fast drying and hard wearing (though is not without its faults, more on that another day).

So if you just want the glossy finish, go for Seche, but if you love the Barry M Gelly shades as much as I do, you can choose several for the same price as a bottle of Seche Vite. Prickly Pear (lavender), Dragonfruit (deep pink) and Satsuma (vivid orange) all look great.  I may be back for more…

What do you think of the finish? And have you tried any Barry M Gelly colours?
